Shompole Conservancy and Lake Magadi

The first vision of the landscape of tectonic collapses is always a highlight when you immerse yourself into a very traditional Africa.

Located at the extreme South of Kenya, the Shompole Group Ranch is an association of several tens of Maasai villages.

There, close to Lake Natron, a landscape of savannah, riverine forests and open plains complements the white and red soda of Lake Magadi and the reflections of the Loita Hills.

The water of the lake, as well as the Ewaso Ngiro River, attract a large number of birds. Pelicans, flamingoes and many others gather in this area, which is part of a wildlife sanctuary of more than 100 sqkm.

On a shore of Lake Magadi, there is a small town created by the company operating the plant for the soda that lies naturally dried on the surface of the lake. Crossing dikes on the lake you will see a large number of water birds, including flamingos, in a setting of great beauty.

Shompole Conservancy is a very special area away from the main touristic circuit. It appeals to connaisseurs who enjoy its genuine African savannah atmosphere, the very limited number of visitors, and the wealth of its wildlife and birdlife against the background of the bright colours of Lake Magadi.
