India

India has an area of 3.2 million square kilometres, making it the world’s 7th largest country, and a population of more than 1.2 billion habitants, ranking it the 2nd most populous country after China.
This country deserves its sub-continent qualifier and presents ecosystems of extreme diversity. The landscapes include several mountain ranges including the famous Himalayan chain in the north and the chains of Hindū-Kūsh and Patkai. At the other extreme, the Thar Desert occupies a large part of western India and many plateaus make up the central region, including the Malwa Plateau to the west, the Deccan Plateau to the south (which overlies most of the Indian Peninsula) and the Chota Nāgpur Plateau in Jharkhand to the east. Finally, India has more than 7,000 km of coastline.
It is in this rich and varied environment that the 28 states that make up the country manage some 166 national parks, which range from a few square kilometres to more than half a million square kilometres for the Nanda Debi Biosphere Reserve.
For visitors interested in nature, India has an extraordinary wildlife whose most emblematic representatives are the Bengal Royal Tiger and the Snow Leopard. In addition there are the Indian great elephant, rhinoceros, lion and leopard. Added to these are the Indian black bear, the wild water buffalo, the wild donkey or onager, the Indian black buck and the blue bull or nilgaut, which is the largest antelope in Asia.
A trip to India parallels an immersion into the wild world of Rudyard Kipling’s “Jungle Book”, revealing a fascinating culture and many other mythical and protected animals.
