Lake Turkana

Lake Turkana (or “Lake Rudolf” before 1975) is a true “Sea of Jade” which marks the northern end of the Rift Valley.

Covering an area of 6.405 sqkm, making it the world’s largest alkaline lake, it can host extremely strong winds, especially during the night. The fish one can catch are mainly Nile perch and tilapia, but the lake is foremost famous for its three volcanic islands that used to house very large populations of crocodiles. This is less the case nowadays but the region is rich in fossils.

This is where Richard Leakey and his family discovered various remains of hominids between 1972 and 1998. Many anthropologists consider this region to be the “cradle of mankind“.
