Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru is one of the lakes of the Rift Valley, lying at an altitude of 1,754 meters above sea level and part of a park of 188 sqkm. The lake is shallow and alkaline. This provides ideal conditions for the growth of microscopic blue algae, which is the first link in the food chain. It provides sustenance for 1 to 2 million lesser flamingos, making the lake one of the greatest bird spectacles on earth. There are over 56 species of mammals including the white rhino, Rothschild giraffe, lion and leopard in the national park. Lake Nakuru itself has an area of 62 sqkm and is part of a picturesque landscape of surrounding woodland and grassland next to Nakuru town.
