Bulawayo

The second city of Zimbabwe, Bulawayo was built in 1894 and is characterized by its large avenues. The town has a great reputation as an art city, enticing visitors with its beautiful National Gallery that houses the workshops of many local artists and small private galleries.

The National Gallery in Bulawayo is also a jewel of colonial architecture, with its wooden frame, doors and floors, fireplaces in small galleries, upstairs balconies overlooking the city, and an inner courtyard.

The Natural History Museum, too, is well worth a visit, with its diverse and extensive range of displays and collections including fauna, invertebrates, minerals and crystals. There are sections on the development of man, ancient rock art, Stone Age and Iron Age history, as well as the more modern colonial experience.
