Makgadikgadi Pan

Makgadikgadi Pan is a salt pan desert with an area of 12,000 sqkm, bigger than Switzerland. It was once the largest expanse of fresh water on the planet. Nowadays it is a waterless and extremely arid and desolate area for most of the year. During the dry season, the grasslands turn to yellow, and only the desert-adapted species remain in this arid environment. It is possible to observe some rare species, unique to the Kalahari, such as brown hyenas, meerkats and springboks.

With the coming of the rains in November, the pans fill with water and the surrounding grasslands attract herds of zebra, wildebeest and antelope, which form the last surviving migration in Southern Africa.
