A typical day in Francisco Coloane Marine Park

A typical day in Francisco Coloane Marine Park includes the following activities:

– Observation of Humpback Whales “Megaptera Novaeangliae” as they visit the region every year between the months of December and May, a record of which is made through the technique of photo identification, (the operator has a catalogue of more than 160 individuals since 1991). The study is conducted by the biologist Juan Capella, who also accompanies and guides this expedition.

– Observation of colonies of sea lions – there are two colonies of resident sea lions, the “Otaria Flavescens” and the “Arctophoca Australis”. They can be observed in headlands and fjords.

– Birding – there is the opportunity to see well-defined groups of birds including black-browed albatross “Thalassarche Melanophry”, Magellanic penguins, skua, chilensis Cataharacta imperial cormorant, Phalacrocorax atricep, giant petrel, Macronectes giganteus, among others.

– Visit the glacier Santa Ines by sailing into the fjord “Helado”. This allows a close encounter with the glacier Santa Ines. The mass of ice and snow is located on this island of the glacier, creating glaciers coming down to the sea with detachments of deep blue ice.
