Okonjima Plains Camp

Okonjima Plains Camp is situated at the edge of a wilderness area in the Omboroko Mountains, about three hours’ drive north from Windhoek. Accommodation consists of 14 rooms, which enjoy a view across the Okonjima grass plains. Four of the rooms form two large, double rooms/family-units. All rooms are set 15m – 20m apart, some distance from ‘The Barn’ or main entertainment area. This ensures that guests can enjoy the tranquility of this area. Each room has a small veranda, 2 double beds, a mini-fridge for own use, a coffee/tea station, 2 roof-fans, twin basins, large shower, a safe and a telephone to contact reception.

Okonjima has an education and research centre, as well as rehabilitation camps for various animals and it is home to a large number of rescued cheetahs, leopards, and other predators. There, visitors have the opportunity to learn about what is being done by the foundation to ensure the survival of cheetah and leopard in Namibia. For the energetic early-riser there are interesting guided walking trails on offer, and bird watching is also a popular activity as over 300 bird species have been identified here. Two spacious hides are located within easy walking distance of the lodge and another is situated at a recently established “vulture restaurant” just a short drive away. Okonjima also has three domesticated lions – Matata, Tambo and Tessie who were born in captivity and rescued by AfriCat. They have become long term residents and, although visits to their home compound no longer form part of the activities generally on offer, they can often be heard in the mornings.
