Matemwe Lodge

Vibrant yet laid-back, Matemwe Lodge offers a very enjoyable tropical island experience. Perched on an outcrop overlooking a shallow, coral-fringed lagoon on the quiet north-eastern coast of Zanzibar Island, the lodge’s great location and famously relaxed and private atmosphere make it the ideal place to unwind at the end of a safari.

Each of the 12 beach-chic chalets, built using local materials and scattered through the lush gardens, has a private sea-facing veranda with hammock and sofa in which to relax and take in the spectacular views of the Indian Ocean. Six triple-bed chalets are available, and there are two that have a private plunge pool. The large bathrooms have a deep bathtub and walk-in shower, and all beds are enclosed by mosquito nets.

The common areas offering quiet corners for lazy afternoons abound – with colourful guest areas, a multilevel swimming pool (surrounded by lounge chairs where one can watch fishermen sail their billowing dhows!), and a poolside bar with fresh cocktails and drinks.

The open-air restaurant sits just above the ocean, with magnificent views of the palm-fringed beach and gently rocking dhows. Seafood is a specialty of the house, and all produce is bought daily from local fishermen and markets.

The pristine Mnemba Atoll lies just off the coast, and it is in these tropical waters that guests will find superb snorkelling, diving and fishing.
