Lebala Camp

Lebala (which means “wide open spaces” in the local language of Setswana) is located in the 2,320 sqkm area ofprivate unfenced wilderness of the Kwando concession. The surrounding landscape is dominated by vast plains with scattered palms and trees supported by wooded savannahs.

The wetlands and floodplains around Lebala provide a wonderful habitat for a wide variety of wildlife including elephants, hippos, lechwes, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, kudu, roan antelope, and buffalo. There are also predators present – wild dogs, lions, cheetahs, hyenas and leopards.

After dark, the floodlights are switched on, and the night game drives allow visitors to observe rare and elusive species such as leopards, small spotted genets and aardwolves. Species of nocturnal birds encountered include the Natal nightjar, and a wide variety of owls.

Depending on the season, it is also possible to take guided bush walks in the area. The distance and location of the walks may vary seasonally.

The eight spacious tents are built on a raised teak decks, furnished for maximum comfort and privacy, and set back among the trees. Endless views from large windows and bridges across the vast plains make Lebala one of Africa’s most beautiful wilderness camps.

Each tent has a reading and writing area, a private bathroom with a Victorian clawfoot tub and ‘for her and for him’ sinks. The bathrooms open to an open air shower closed by reeds, with hot and cold running water. The tents are kept cool with a combination of ceiling fans and screen walls. There is also a family tent consisting of an additional twin bedroom in the tent itself, allowing parents and young children to sleep in the same tent for their peace of mind.

The main areas of the camp include a small swimming pool, communal fireplace and dining area, souvenir shop, bar, and lounge area including a small library. Succulent dishes are prepared by the chefs and served in the open dining room. After dinner, there is a campfire around which visitors can sit. Outdoor private dinners can also be arranged, by the pool or by the fire, for special occasions such as birthdays and honeymoons.
